Where fires are burning, daily (Aqua, 1 km)

MODIS/Aqua Thermal Anomalies/Fire Daily L3 Global 1km SIN Grid V061
land NASA LPCLOUD Level 3 active HDF-EOS2
In plain English

What it measures. Where active fires and other hot spots are burning on the land, packaged as daily maps. It also notes how intensely each fire is radiating heat and flags how reliable each detection is.

How it's made. Generated from the MODIS instrument on the Aqua satellite, which spots the heat signature of fires, then bundled into 8-day files on a 1 km global grid.

How & where you'd use it. Used to monitor wildfires, agricultural burning, and other heat sources, and to study fire patterns over time.

Official description

The Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Thermal Anomalies and Fire Daily (MYD14A1) Version 6.1 data are generated every eight days at 1 kilometer (km) spatial resolution as a Level 3 product. MYD14A1 contains eight consecutive days of fire data conveniently packaged into a single file. The Science Dataset (SDS) layers include the fire mask, pixel quality indicators, maximum fire-radiative-power (MaxFRP), and the position of the fire pixel within the scan. Each layer consists of daily per pixel information for each of the eight days of data acquisition. Known Issues * For complete information about known issues please refer to the [MODIS/VIIRS Land Quality Assessment website](https://landweb.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/knownissue?sensor=MODIS&sat=Aqua&as=61).
