Carbon in tiny ocean particles (NOAA-21, near-real-time)
What it measures. The concentration of carbon held in tiny organic particles floating in surface seawater, mapped globally. Being a near-real-time product, its calibration is rougher than the final version.
How it's made. Derived from ocean-color reflectance measured by the VIIRS instrument on the NOAA-21 satellite, quickly processed into a global gridded map.
How & where you'd use it. Used to estimate how much carbon is stored in surface ocean particles and to support studies of ocean carbon cycling and transport to deeper water.

Official description
The Ocean Biology DAAC produces near real-time (NRT) products using the best-available combination of ancillary data from meteorological and ozone data. As such, the inputs and the calibration used are less than optimal. Near real-time products provide a snapshot of the data during a short time period within a single orbit. The Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) data suite includes product of particulate organic carbon concentration from ocean-color reflectance. POC is widely used to quantify surface carbon stocks, support biogeochemical and export-flux studies, and provide ecological context alongside chlor_a, bbp, Kd_490, and SST. Geophysical variables in this suite include: - poc - Particulate Organic Carbon (mg C m⁻³), D. Stramski, 2007 (443/555 version)
