Ozone in the air (Suomi-NPP, reanalysis summary)

TROPESS CrIS-SNPP L2 Ozone for Reanalysis Stream, Summary Product V1 (TRPSYL2O3CRSRS) at GES DISC
atmosphere NASA GES_DISC Level 2 active
In plain English

What it measures. How much ozone is in the air and how it's spread out from the surface to the top of the atmosphere, with error estimates, summarized day by day.

How it's made. Derived from the CrIS instrument on the Suomi-NPP satellite, processed by NASA's TROPESS project as a 'reanalysis' run covering a fixed past period (late 2015 to mid-2023).

How & where you'd use it. Ozone near the surface is a harmful pollutant while higher up it shields us from UV, so this supports air-quality, pollution, and atmospheric chemistry studies.

What's measured

ATMOSPHERE › ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY › OXYGEN COMPOUNDS › ATMOSPHERIC OZONE

Coverage & cadence

  • Time span2015-12-01 → ongoing

What you can do with it

  • Map air pollutants — NO₂, aerosols, ozone
  • Track greenhouse gases and Earth's energy budget
  • Feed weather and air-quality analysis
Official description

The TROPESS CrIS-SNPP L2 Ozone for Reanalysis Stream, Summary Product contains the vertical distribution of the retrieved atmospheric state of ozone (O3), and formal uncertainties measured by the CrIS instruments on the Suomi-NPP satellite. The reanalysis stream summary product is global for the time period from 2015-12-01 to 2023-05-18. The NASA TRopospheric Ozone and Precursors from Earth System Sounding (TROPESS) project, uses an optimal estimation algorithm, known as the MUlti-SpEctra, MUlti-SpEcies, Multi-SEnsors (MUSES). The data files are written in the netCDF version 4 file format, and each file contains one day of data. The data have a spatial resolution of 14 km (CrIS nadir FOV), and are reported at 26 vertical levels from the surface to 0.1 hPa. The principal investigator for the TROPESS project is Kevin W. Bowman.
