Weather data used to process soil moisture (SMAP)
What it measures. Holds supporting weather and atmosphere data — surface and atmospheric conditions from a weather model — provided at hourly and 3-hourly intervals.
How it's made. Drawn from NASA's GEOS-5 weather model (not from the satellite itself) and packaged specifically to support processing of SMAP soil-moisture data.
How & where you'd use it. A behind-the-scenes ancillary input: it supplies the atmospheric context needed to turn SMAP's raw measurements into accurate soil-moisture products, rather than being used on its own.

What you can do with it
- Map air pollutants — NO₂, aerosols, ozone
- Track greenhouse gases and Earth's energy budget
- Feed weather and air-quality analysis
Official description
This ancillary SMAP product contains three dynamic GMAO GEOS-5 modeled data sets. Each data set contains surface and atmospheric parameters pertinent to SMAP provided in 1) hourly, 2) 3-hour, and 3) averaged over 3-hour intervals.
