Ocean color and tiny sea plants (ADEOS-I OCTS)
What it measures. Reports ocean color and what it reveals about the sea — chlorophyll (a stand-in for tiny floating sea plants), how light is reflected and absorbed, and related quantities like particulate carbon and calcite.
How it's made. Produced from the OCTS instrument aboard Japan's ADEOS-I satellite, after calibrating the signal and correcting for haze in the atmosphere.
How & where you'd use it. Lets scientists study ocean plant life, productivity, and carbon cycling, adding a 1990s chapter to the long ocean-color record.

Official description
The Ocean Color (OC) data suite provides calibrated, atmospherically corrected ocean-optics measurements and derived biogeophysical products. This data suite includes the Apparent Optical Properties (AOP) and provides satellite-derived measures of the interaction between solar radiation and the upper ocean. AOPs are “apparent” because they depend not only on the inherent optical properties (IOPs) of seawater and its constituents but also on the ambient light field. These variables are critical for studying light penetration, primary productivity, and biogeochemical cycling.
