How ozone shifts month to month, by altitude (MERRA-2)

In plain English

What it measures. Monthly averages of how ozone is changing over time at different altitudes, broken out by what's driving the change, such as chemistry, moisture, and air movement. The data are organized by altitude (pressure level).

How it's made. Produced by NASA's MERRA-2 reanalysis, which blends decades of satellite observations with a weather-and-climate model to create a consistent record covering 1980 to the present.

How & where you'd use it. Helps researchers understand what controls ozone in the atmosphere and how it varies, supporting climate and atmospheric chemistry studies.

Official description

M2TMNPODT (or tavgM_3d_odt_Np) is a 3-dimensional monthly mean data collection in Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2). This collection consists of assimilations of ozone tendencies on the 42 pressure levels, such as total ozone analysis tendency, tendency of odd oxygen mixing ratio due to chemistry, tendency of odd oxygen due to moist processes, and tendency of ozone due to dynamics. The information on the pressure levels can be found in the section 4.2 of the MERRA-2 File Specification document. The collection also includes variance of certain parameters. MERRA-2 is the latest version of global atmospheric reanalysis for the satellite era produced by NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) using the Goddard Earth Observing System Model (GEOS) version 5.12.4. The dataset covers the period of 1980-present with the latency of ~3 weeks after the end of a month.
